What motivates you to help others achieve their nutritional goals and lead healthier lives?
II finished my dietetic internship and became an RD in 2020. I then worked in a community hospital until January 2022. In the hospital I worked with patients with diabetes, pre-diabetes, heart disease and many other chronic illnesses. After leaving the hospital I began working in the private practice setting, primarily with women with varying degrees of disordered eating and/or yo-yo dieting. Many of the people I work with have complicated relationships with food and their weight, so we work on unlearning a lot of toxicmessaging from diet culture and relearning how to listen to and fuel our bodies.
What is your nutrition Philosophy?
Food is about both nourishment and enjoyment. Every food can fit into a balanced diet. When you restrict foods or put them on a pedestal, you set yourself up for failure. Learning to listen to your body and understanding how to fuel it, while still enjoying the sensory and social aspects of eating, is a life skill that can reduce a lot of stress and anxiety in your life.
What’s one piece of advice you’d give someone who’s nervous to start their nutrition journey?
Seeing how my clients speak to themselves and carry themselves differently. Chronic dieting or feeling uncomfortable in your body can take a huge toll on your mental and emotional health. Seeing the changes in how my clients speak to themselves, treat themselves and carry themselves as they relearn how to trust and fuel their body is incredibly motivating for me. I want to hear the small goals that you’re excited about but think nobody else will care about. I care. I’m pumped to hear how much easier it felt to go up the stairs at work. I want to see the pants you were too nervous to wear a month ago but strutted around in today. When I see someone’s face gradually become brighter and the way they speak about themselves become kinder, knowing that I got to be part of that journey it’s the biggest motivator.
